During different events, BIPV modules take attention due to their beauty, customization, and electricity generation. They also stand out because they can be frameless, unlike traditional PV modules designed with frames. So, many people are asking: how does BIPV mechanical installation work?
This question is important because installers need to ensure both system safety and public safety, while also maintaining aesthetics according to the original design. At the same time, there is a growing trend toward minimalist facade installation and clean architectural integration.
BIPV Mechanical Installation Without Frames: Is It Possible?
Solutions without screws, rivets, welding, holes, or glass standoffs are now possible.
Traditional facade glass is fixed with standoffs after drilling holes in the glass. However, for BIPV modules with solar cells inside the glass, this method is not suitable.
Metal structures for perimeter installation with glazing beads are possible. Installers can find many aluminum system options on the market, with different profiles and glass thickness.
Because of this, frames are not standard in BIPV, but only used when specially required.
However, frames with glazing beads are not common in BIPV. This is because modern projects require coplanar surfaces that reduce dust accumulation. As a result, building owners can reduce cleaning work and maintain better aesthetics over time. At the same time, PV developers can achieve higher energy output due to reduced shading.
For this reason, BIPV modules often use thicker glass to replace frames and ensure strength, including flexural, torsion, tensile, and impact resistance.
So, when working with heavy glass PV modules, safe mechanical installation without perimeter frames becomes a challenge.
However, there are now three modern, proven, and reliable solutions.
1. Adhesives for BIPV Mechanical Installation
Modern materials science has developed adhesives with an initial fluid form. Single or hybrid polymers, based on silicones or polyurethanes, can create high-strength bonding between different materials.
With this solution, installers can create fixation points or lines behind the module. These can be directly bonded to the building structure or connected through detachable metal hooks.
Most importantly, all fixation points remain hidden, preserving the building design.
2. Double-Sided Tapes in BIPV Installation Systems
Acrylic foam tapes provide strong, durable, and temperature-resistant bonding. They are widely used because they are easier to handle and allow for cleaner installation work. Like adhesives, they can create permanent or removable hidden fixation points behind the module.
3. Sealants for Weather Protection and Durability
After installation, sealants help prevent air, water, and dust from entering the system.
Common materials include rubber, silicone, and butyl. These products are available in different forms, such as solid or fluid, rigid profiles or rolls, and permanent or removable options. Some are also paintable for better finishing.
