From Buildings to the Ocean: Unlocking New Possibilities for BIPV

Building-Integrated Photovoltaics (BIPV) has long been synonymous with sustainable architecture, but its potential goes far beyond buildings. Recent research from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) has revealed an exciting new frontier: integrating photovoltaic systems into cruise ships. This breakthrough opens the door for BIPV to expand into the transportation and maritime sectors, reshaping how we think about renewable energy applications.

Green Energy on the High Seas

The DLR study simulated the installation of photovoltaic systems on cruise ship cabin balconies, with a design that maximizes both functionality and aesthetics. Each balcony is equipped with two 250 W solar panels—one integrated into the glass barrier and another positioned under the balcony. This setup ensures effective energy generation while blending seamlessly into the ship’s structure.

The findings are impressive. For a standard Helios-class cruise ship with 1,655 balcony cabins, the system could generate up to 827.5 kW of power. Simulations conducted in the Caribbean and Northern Europe demonstrated energy self-sufficiency rates of 45% and 47%, respectively. On a full-ship scale, this translates to daily savings of up to 3.8 MWh.
