In the first half of this year, Germany achieved a remarkable milestone by deploying 200 MW of balcony PV systems, according to recent figures from Bundesnetzagentur. This capacity is represented by approximately 220,000 new systems, showcasing a significant uptake in residential solar installations. The simplification of registration processes for plug-in solar devices since April has been a key driver of this growth. As a result, the average registered gross output of these systems has increased from 800 W last year to around 900 W this year.
However, the actual installed capacity could be even higher, as many PV system owners may still need to register their installations. This growth is part of a broader trend in Germany’s renewable energy sector. In the first half of the year, Germany added 9.3 GW of renewables, with around 7.55 GW coming from photovoltaics. Bundesnetzagentur President Klaus Müller highlighted the continuous expansion in PV, noting that compared to the total output at the end of 2023, almost 10% more solar power was added.
With more than 90 GW of installed solar capacity, Germany is on track to reach an ambitious target of 215 GW by 2030. This development presents both an enormous opportunity and a challenge for the entire electricity sector transformation process.
