Three basic principles of photovoltaic curtain wall design

The design of photovoltaic curtain walls generally follows three basic principles: 

1.Safety First and Coordination

Under the premise of safeguarding safety elements such as structural safety and electrical safety, multiple influencing factors are integrated and evaluated to properly and organically integrate PV power generation materials and their systems into the curtain wall system. In fact, such integration cannot pursue the ultimate or the best unilaterally. For example, it is wrong and dangerous to pursue power generation efficiency and economy while ignoring safety and various functional requirements of the building for the curtain wall. 

In fact, combined with extensive application practice, in the vast majority of cases, due to the fact that PV curtain wall is difficult to obtain the best orientation and tilt angle, PV curtain wall of photovoltaic power generation building materials is difficult to be in the best power generation; because the building investors and architects for PV curtain wall has color, light transmission and other requirements, there is a certain reduce of the power generation efficiency; the safety and related functions, coupled with the architectural art performance needs can be the reason for the increase of the unit cost of the PV curtain wall and decline of the economy. So purely from the perspective of power generation revenue, its economy is weaker than the roof distributed PV power station. 

The important thing is how to combine the requirements and elements of safety, power generation efficiency, architectural expression, functions, economy, etc. to achieve the best overall design. There is no single method, path or outcome for resolving conflicts and contradictions in design by integrating various factors, but safety first and coordination should be the most basic design principle. 

2. Prioritizing Building Material Function

It is important to note that photovoltaic curtain wall products, first need to meet the function of building materials, on the basis of which to consider improving the efficiency of power generation.

Photovoltaic curtain wall primarily should function as the building envelope. In the architectural design, this part of the photovoltaic curtain wall should assume the relevant functions are required to fully respond and meet, such as: sound insulation, heat insulation, frost, moisture, wind resistance, etc..

On the basis of these functional requirements, a scenario analysis is conducted to determine whether there is a feasibility of adjusting light transmission, color, orientation, tilt angle, etc. to improve power generation efficiency. Usually, such adjustments need to be fully communicated with project investors and material suppliers to ensure coordination with investment objectives and architectural artistry through better material language and construction methods.

3. Architectural Art

Improvement of the power generation efficiency should be based on responding to the creative expression of architectural art.

Photovoltaic curtain wall not only has the corresponding function of building envelope structure, but also has the ability to depict architectural art creation because of the richness and diversity of its material language.

When architects conceive architectural plans, they should systematically integrate PV curtain walls into the overall plan. When there is a conflict between the artistic expression of architecture and the improvement of power generation efficiency, priority should be given to the artistic expression of architecture.
